Not only is NASA planning to hurl two satellites into the lunar surface Friday morning, but one of them has its own Twitter feed. The Twittering satellite is sportily named LCROSS. The tone of the updates remains upbeat, though I can't help but wonder if the tweets will turn more suicidal toward the end, or will the robot begin to doubt its mission and cry out for help from the online space flight following community?

What does all of this say about NASA's self-image after decades of budget cuts?

What happened last time we tried to crash a satellite into the moon?

More importantly, what comes up when I log into Facebook this afternoon?

Isn't this a little too Craigslist for Facebook?
UPDATE: Little did I know, it is apparently common practice for lunar orbiters, satellites, and all variety of space-craft to have their own Twitter feeds.

"Just got home...haven't read you're blog yet but if there's a lot of stories about violence I'm sure they're all true. I don't know where to start, I'd taken my camera but had the sence to take out the memory card this came in hany as I was serched twice (by Basij) before getting stuck in the middle of hell. If I'd been caught with pictures it would mean jail time and a possible a charge of spying (as I'm a Canadian citizen). Eventually I dropped of the camera at the house of a friend without being able to take any pictures as it would make me a definate target...The chants of death to Khamenei are true...I witnessed peoples fear of the Basij dissapear, an 80 year old chadori woman with rocks in her hands calling for the exacution of khamenei and all Basij...A group of Basij were surrounded and forced in to a building, the front was blocked with garbage and set on fire, They (basij) opened fire on the crowd with what I assume were blanks, the crowed disspersed for a moment the came back with a fury...thats when the molotov cocktails came out. When I moved on the building was on fire...an hour later when I passed by again there wasn't much of a building left. There was full blown war...there was a young man who had taken all of a basij's things including their teargas rifle. We were finnaly able to get out on the back of motorcycle...the ride home took 25 minutes,for 15 minutes of it we were passing intermitently though Basij and protesters fires placed to displace the teargas... might I add the 3 hours that we walked through fire we didn't see one shop or car that had been damaged by protesters...however I just recieved word for the one who was kind enough to keep my camera and other belongings that the Basij had gone into her street and destoryed cars...thats all I can get out for now hope some of it may be useful...I'm pissed I was unable to get pictures." Swiss Architect Peter Zumthor was awarded this year's Pritzker Prize. I am amazed by his Brother Klaus Field Chapel. The chapel was commissioned by a German farmer who helped construct the project with his neighbors. The process of construction involved placing spruce trunks in a tent-formation, coating these with layers of concrete over the course of several weeks. A fire was lit in the center of the structure to burn out the spruce tent. Finally, a floor of lead was poured. The top of the structure is left open, allowing sunlight and rainwater to enter from above.

I saw Duplicity last week. Good for watching when you want to get your mind off things but not exactly the most captivating or the most straight-forward of films. Duplicity does not come off as a spy-film, as I initially expected. It has something of that retro-fifties form to it (playful opening credits, scenes that end by shrinking into little boxes and transition into other little boxes [i didn't know how to describe that at all]) but also something of the director's trying to figure out a form and do something playful (I also felt this similarly with Sideways).

NYMag's David Edelstein says it well of writer-director Tony Gilroy:

he knows how to write a final scene. He knows how to write an opener, too. It’s in the middle that things get laborious.

Duplicity is certainly busy. Gilroy tarts it up with multiple gliding split screens (they work better on 24), and James Newton Howard’s brassy score gives the illusion of momentum even when the frames are inert. Gilroy does loop-de-loops with the syntax. There’s an overture in which Ray seduces Claire—or has Claire seduced Ray into seducing her? Then it’s five years later. Then it’s two years earlier. Then it’s next week, then last week, then three minutes from now, then 10,000 years on, when the robots have taken over. Michael J. Fox flies by in a DeLorean. After a flurry of climactic flashbacks, we finally take in the whole puzzle picture. The last shot of Roberts and Owen is what we’ve waited two hours to see. Gilroy knows that after all the whizbang convolutions, it still comes down to a look on a movie star’s face …

While the plot did get laborious through the middle (I think both my friends fell asleep at certain points), Duplicity presented a fascinating portrait of the inner-workings of the supercorporation. I think this was actually what I found most interesting about the film. A glimpse at the inside of romanticized Orwellian business machines, capitalist-Darwinist banter throughout. Though it did appear "deeply shallow" overall, there was something about the role the two corporations played in the movie (in a sense they were more the protagonists than Julia Roberts and Clive Owen) that kept me intrigued. Or, maybe I've been reading too much Kafka lately.

Why can't I just be done with Ryan McGinley?

I know I've written on him before, and I know that this is usually cause for dismissal in the blog world, but I really just can't seem to get over Ryan McGinley (you know, the contemporary photographer, b. 1977). I start going through the new works that are up on his website, from an exhibit called "I Know Where the Summer Goes" at the Team Gallery (you can read an understatedly sensationalizing article about the process for creating the works here). Ok, great, Ryan, more pictures of frolicking naked young people. I'm really quite impressed by the subject matter and all, but didn't you do it last time around and then everyone else did it and now nobody cares anymore?

It's when this feeling starts sinking in that I get to a photo like this:

And I think, "Oh, that's kind of spiffing."

So I'm starting to trust in this McGinley fellow again, beginning to have some faith in his efforts...But then he pulls out something like THIS:

This perfectly captures -- "WHOOOPEEEE!" -- well I think the whole point is that I can't put it in to words, right? Otherwise why would we need photography? Pure bliss. Every time someone looks at this photo an orgasm gets its wings.*

Anyway, check out the rest of the pictures, I'm getting boring.

*Two notes: 1) this was, ultimately, a positive review and 2) contrary to popular belief, my aesthetic judgments are not based on the number of sparkles in a given work.

As a post-script, former My Little Dead Dick's (RIP) Patrick Tsai is doing a new blog that hasn't quite been around long enough for me to form and opinion about it with one of McGinley's more or less notable interns-turned-model-turned-photographer Coley Brown called growing up. Patrick is living in Tokyo doing photography there after splitting from his girlfriend Madi Ju (the other half of My Little Dead Dick) last year.
